As far as narration, I’ll be honest Stina Nielsen speaks clearly and is easy to understand, but I was grateful I’d borrowed the book from the library to read along with.

If Barbie and all the many dolls that emulate her were not the most prevalent option people wouldn’t be nearly as critical of her. I would say the Naomi Wolf quote, “The harm of these images is not that they exist, but that they proliferate at the expense of most other images and stories of female heroines. If the icon of the anorexic fashion model were on flat image out of a full spectrum in which young girls could find a thousand wild and tantalizing visions of possible future, that icon would not have the power to hurt them.” may be an overarching answer to Barbie. I would note that the author largely just presents the arguments, but provides little conclusions. The book has chapters on many topics from body image, consumerism, racial diversity, Barbie as a sex object, and art. The book quotes numerous fans and critics (children and adults). The book gives a quick rundown on the woman who created Barbie, her creation, her marketing before getting into the pros and cons about her (which was what I was more interested in). I picked it up on a whim because I played with Barbie as a child and have heard very mixed opinions about her over the years. This is an interesting and quick listen about Barbie.
